Four Seasons Langkawi Launches Sunrise Yoga Experience in UNESCO Mangroves

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi has introduced Roots of Breath, a new sunrise yoga experience taking place among the mangroves of Malaysia’s Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark.

Rather than being held in a conventional yoga studio, the sessions take place on temporary sandbanks that emerge with the tide within Kilim Karst Geoforest Park.

The experience is available throughout the year, with individual sessions scheduled according to sunrise and tidal conditions.

Yoga on Langkawi’s tidal sandbanks

Roots of Breath is led by Four Seasons Resort Langkawi’s resident yogi, Kiran Menon, with each session limited to a maximum of five participants.

The small group size allows the practice to be adapted to participants’ experience levels, including both guests returning to yoga and more experienced practitioners.

There is no permanent structure or dedicated yoga platform at the location. Mats are placed directly on the sandbank, surrounded by mangrove forest and water.

Timing varies according to natural conditions, with sessions beginning around sunrise and taking place while the sandbank remains exposed before the incoming tide covers it again.

“What I love about the sandbanks is that no two mornings are ever the same,” Menon said. “The tide, the light, the birds and the way the mist sits on the water all change, and the practice changes too.”

Wellness inside a UNESCO Global Geopark

Kilim Karst Geoforest Park forms part of the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, an area known for its mangrove forests, limestone formations, coastal landscapes and diverse wildlife.

Four Seasons is using the location to connect its wellness programme more closely with the natural environment surrounding the resort.

The name Roots of Breath is inspired by the mangrove ecosystem itself. Mangroves are adapted to changing tidal conditions, with specialised root systems that allow them to survive in waterlogged, low-oxygen environments.

“There are places that ask you to slow down the moment you arrive, and the Langkawi mangroves are one of them,” said Heriberto Pena, Director of Spa at Four Seasons Resort Langkawi.

Pena said the programme was designed to provide guests with access to an unusual part of the destination while keeping the experience small and closely connected to the landscape.

Available year-round at Four Seasons Langkawi

Roots of Breath becomes part of the broader wellness offering at Four Seasons Resort Langkawi, which is located on Malaysia’s Andaman Sea coast.

Unlike a scheduled daily resort class, the experience is arranged around local tide and sunrise times, meaning its timing can change throughout the year.

The limited capacity of five guests also positions the programme as a more private alternative to conventional group yoga sessions offered by many resorts.

Guests staying at Four Seasons Resort Langkawi can arrange Roots of Breath through the property’s concierge, with sessions available year-round when tidal and weather conditions permit.
