Anantara Kalutara Resort is celebrating its 10th anniversary this September, marking a decade of operations at its waterfront location on Sri Lanka’s west coast.
The resort sits on a peninsula where the Kalu Ganga meets the Indian Ocean, approximately one hour from Colombo, and features 141 rooms, suites and private pool villa residences.
Its anniversary celebrations are taking place under the theme “The Stories We Share,” focusing on the guests and employees who have been part of the property since its opening.
A resort with roots in Geoffrey Bawa’s architecture
One of Anantara Kalutara’s most distinctive features is its connection to Geoffrey Bawa, the Sri Lankan architect widely associated with the development of Tropical Modernism.
Bawa began designing the property in 1995, creating a concept intended to integrate the building with its tropical landscape and waterfront surroundings.
The project was subsequently completed by architect Channa Daswatte, one of Bawa’s protégés, while retaining the principles of the original design.
That influence remains visible throughout the resort today, with open spaces, natural light, tropical gardens and the relationship between the architecture and surrounding water playing central roles in the property’s design.
141 rooms, suites and pool villas
Anantara Kalutara offers 141 rooms, suites and private pool villa residences, catering to leisure travellers, couples, families and groups.
The resort has developed a range of experiences around its Sri Lankan location, including wellness programmes, local cuisine and destination activities, alongside weddings and other private celebrations.
Its position between the river and ocean also distinguishes the property from many of Sri Lanka’s more conventional beachfront resorts.
The 10th anniversary is being used to highlight Kalutara itself as a destination, combining coastal scenery with access to local culture, heritage and wellness traditions while remaining relatively close to Colombo.
Guests and employees at the centre of anniversary celebrations
Rather than focusing solely on the hotel’s history, Anantara is using the anniversary to recognise both returning guests and long-serving employees.
Team members who have worked at the resort since before its opening will share stories from the property’s first decade, while repeat guests will also feature in the anniversary programme.

Anantara Kalutara enters its second decade
The anniversary comes as Sri Lanka continues to develop its position as an Indian Ocean leisure destination, combining beach tourism with cultural, nature and wellness travel.
For Anantara Kalutara, the property’s location and architectural heritage remain central to its positioning as it enters its second decade.
The resort will continue to build its offering around its river and ocean setting, Sri Lankan hospitality and the architectural principles established when Geoffrey Bawa first began designing the property more than three decades ago.
