Wizz Air Opens Podgorica Base, Adds 14 New Routes

Airlines & Airports

Wizz Air has announced a major expansion in Montenegro, unveiling plans to open its 36th operational base at Podgorica Airport starting March 2026. The move will see two Airbus A321neo aircraft stationed in the capital, supporting the launch of 14 new routes to key destinations across Europe.

The expansion will bring over 1 million additional seats annually, significantly enhancing connectivity between Montenegro and cities such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Hamburg, Basel, Cologne, Ljubljana, and others.

With this development, Wizz Air strengthens its position as the largest airline in Montenegro, operating 23 routes from Podgorica and becoming the #1 carrier in the country.

New Routes from Podgorica (Start Dates & Frequencies):

Wizz Air’s CEO József Váradi highlighted the broader significance of the move:

“This base is more than an operational expansion – it’s a long-term investment in the future of Montenegrin mobility, economy, and global reach.”

The base is expected to create 80 direct jobs and support over 700 indirect roles, boosting local employment, tourism, and trade. Since launching its first Podgorica route in 2016, Wizz Air has flown nearly 2 million passengers in Montenegro, with 2025 figures showing a 12.6% YoY seat increase.

Wizz Air’s expansion comes as it continues to invest in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, aiming to improve sustainability and maintain its position as a leading low-cost airline in Europe.
