Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will temporarily close its Kaagbaan Runway for annual maintenance between September 21 and September 29, 2026, with aircraft redirected to other runways during the works.
The runway will be unavailable for air traffic on weekdays throughout the maintenance period but will reopen during the weekend of September 26 and 27.
Flights that would normally use the Kaagbaan for arrivals or departures will primarily be redirected to the Zwanenburgbaan, Aalsmeerbaan and Buitenveldertbaan runways.
Other runways may also be used depending on weather conditions and traffic levels.
Kaagbaan maintenance scheduled for September 21-29
The annual works will cover several parts of the runway and its supporting infrastructure.
Schiphol will inspect the Kaagbaan’s asphalt surface and carry out repairs where necessary, while runway markings will also be inspected and maintained.
Electrical systems and cabling will undergo checks, and the airport will flush sections of the stormwater drainage system.
Maintenance teams will also mow surrounding grass areas and clean or replace runway lighting.
The work will be carried out in cooperation with Dutch construction company Heijmans.
Annual maintenance is performed to keep the runway and its associated infrastructure in safe operating condition.
More flights expected on alternative Schiphol runways
The temporary closure will change runway usage patterns at Amsterdam’s main airport.
Schiphol expects increased use of the Zwanenburgbaan, Aalsmeerbaan and Buitenveldertbaan while the Kaagbaan is unavailable.
Depending on wind direction, traffic volumes and operational requirements, aircraft could also use other runways, including the Schiphol-Oostbaan.
The changes mean areas located beneath the flight paths associated with these runways may experience more aircraft movements than usual during the maintenance period.
Schiphol said it plans runway maintenance to minimise the duration of disruption while completing the required work.
Kaagbaan returns to service during weekend
Unlike some extended runway maintenance programmes, the Kaagbaan will not remain closed continuously throughout the nine-day period.
The runway is scheduled to return to normal availability on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, before maintenance resumes on Monday.
The works are expected to conclude on Tuesday, September 29.
Schiphol directs local residents seeking information about temporary runway use and flight paths to the Local Community Contact Centre Schiphol (BAS), which provides current information on airport operations and handles enquiries and complaints related to air traffic.
