Goodbye Passport Stamp: EU’s New Entry/Exit System (EES) Launches on October 12

News

The European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES) will officially come into effect on 12 October 2025, marking a major shift in how non-EU travelers are processed at the external borders of the Schengen Area.

The EES will replace the traditional manual passport stamping with an automated system that registers biometric data such as facial recognition and fingerprints, along with passport details. The aim is to streamline border checks for short-stay visitors (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) while enhancing security and maintaining compliance with the EU’s data protection laws.

Who is affected?

The EES applies to non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays — including travelers from countries that are visa-exempt (e.g., the UK, US, Canada) and those who require a Schengen short-stay visa. However, the system does not affect:

  • EU citizens

  • Non-EU residents with valid residence permits or cards

  • Certain travelers covered by diplomatic or special travel arrangements

Gradual Rollout and Full Implementation by 2026

The rollout will be gradual, with the EES running alongside manual passport stamping during the initial phase. Full implementation across all border control points is expected by 10 April 2026. Authorities say the transition period will help minimize disruptions and allow passengers to adapt to the new process.

Coordination with ETIAS

The EES is part of a broader EU travel reform and will work in coordination with the upcoming ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), which will be required for visa-exempt travelers starting in 2026. Together, these systems aim to provide a unified and secure travel framework across Europe.

Important Traveler Advice

Spain’s Ministry of the Interior and Aena have begun informing international passengers about the EES launch. Travelers are advised to allow extra time for border checks in the initial weeks of operation, as longer wait times may occur while the system is being rolled out.
