American Airlines App Adds Automatic Seat Preference Matching

American Airlines App Adds Automatic Seat Preference Matching

American Airlines has introduced an app feature that monitors seat availability and automatically moves eligible passengers when a seat matching their preferences becomes available.

AAdvantage members can opt in after completing a booking and select characteristics such as a window, aisle or middle seat. The app then checks for an eligible match, updates the reservation and notifies the passenger if a change is made.

The feature is intended to reduce the need to repeatedly check seat maps before travelling.

Who Can Use Seat Monitoring?

The service is available to AAdvantage members on single-passenger reservations who already have an assigned seat. It is available up to 24 hours before departure.

Passengers choose the preferences that guide any reassignment. A move depends on a matching seat becoming available and meeting the airline’s eligibility requirements.

The feature is therefore aimed at individual bookings, rather than groups trying to find seats together.

Changes Stay Within the Existing Cabin

Automatic moves are limited to eligible seats in the passenger’s existing cabin and will not generate additional seat charges.

American will not move a passenger into a higher-priced paid seat, even if it matches their preferences. The tool is a seat-selection service, rather than a cabin upgrade system.

Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, said the feature was designed to give travellers more control while reducing the work involved in managing their booking.

Developed Through American’s Technology Training Programme

The feature grew out of American’s ADEPT programme, a two-year initiative for early-career technology staff.

Participants worked with the airline’s Customer Experience team to address a familiar frustration: passengers repeatedly returning to the seat map in search of a better option.

The resulting system monitors availability, checks the passenger’s stated preferences and applies eligibility rules before making a change. American said the development team also used AI-enabled tools to streamline parts of the design and development process.
