Air India has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, marking a new chapter in the airline’s transformation under the Tata Group.
Gebremariam succeeds Campbell Wilson, who led Air India through its initial turnaround phase, overseeing the airline’s integration, fleet renewal programme and organisational restructuring.
The appointment follows what Air India described as a global search for a leader capable of guiding the carrier through its next phase of expansion.
Experienced Airline Executive Takes the Helm
Gebremariam is best known for his leadership of Ethiopian Airlines Group, where he served as CEO for more than a decade.
During his tenure, Ethiopian Airlines expanded into Africa’s largest airline group, significantly increasing both its fleet and international network while establishing itself as one of the continent’s most profitable carriers.
His experience includes airline operations, network expansion, maintenance and engineering, workforce development and hub strategy.
Air India Enters Its Next Growth Phase
Air India says the leadership change comes as the airline shifts from rebuilding its operations to focusing on long-term growth and profitability.
The carrier is continuing to invest in fleet modernisation, international expansion, customer experience and operational performance as part of its ongoing transformation.
Announcing the appointment, N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, said the airline is entering “a critical execution and expansion era.”
“Tewolde’s track record in building one of the world’s most efficient and profitable airline groups makes him uniquely suited to lead Air India,” Chandrasekaran said. “His operational expertise, commitment to safety and vision for hub development will be instrumental as we establish Air India as a premier global carrier.”
Focus on Reliability and Global Expansion
Responding to his appointment, Gebremariam said he sees significant opportunities for Air India as the country’s aviation market continues to grow.
“It is a profound honour to be entrusted with leading Air India at such a historic moment in its journey,” he said. “The opportunity to build a world-class global airline that reflects India’s extraordinary economic potential is uniquely exciting.”
According to Air India, the next stage of its strategy will focus on improving operational reliability, strengthening international connectivity, enhancing customer experience and investing further in employees through training and career development.
The airline also confirmed that additional details regarding Gebremariam’s transition and official start date will be announced at a later stage.
