Creating Natural Habitats and Recreational Spaces
Over the course of the project, the River Glatt will be reconfigured with new river bends, shallow riverbanks, and reed meadows. These changes are designed to enhance biodiversity and improve the quality of local ecosystems. In addition, pathways and recreational areas will be developed on both sides of the river, with rest areas and direct access to the water, allowing the public to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
Environmental Impact and Project Scope
The revitalisation will cover a distance of 3,250 meters and an area of 31.3 hectares. The project will involve planting 950 new trees and introducing rare plant species, further supporting the local ecosystem. The total cost of the project is estimated at nearly CHF 50 million, which will be fully funded by Flughafen Zürich AG.
Addressing Habitat Impairment
This project is a direct response to the ecological impact caused by Zurich Airport’s ongoing expansion. By revitalising the River Glatt, Flughafen Zürich AG is mitigating the loss of habitats caused by development. The project will take place in the immediate vicinity of the airport, where the habitat deficits have occurred, and will also involve the use of removed soil to enhance agricultural areas in Furttal.
