United Airlines has introduced a new mobile app feature designed to give passengers more options when they are rebooked following a flight disruption.
Customers moved to a later flight can now join the standby list for up to three eligible earlier United flights to the same destination while keeping their existing confirmed reservation.
Instead of requiring passengers to repeatedly check for availability, United’s system monitors the selected flights automatically and sends a text message when a seat becomes available.
Passengers can then decide whether to take the earlier flight or retain their existing booking.
Passengers Can Stand By for Three Earlier Flights
The new feature is available directly through the United mobile app.
Passengers affected by a disruption can select up to three earlier eligible flights and add themselves to their standby lists.
United then monitors seat availability across those flights in the background.
If a seat becomes available, the passenger receives a text notification and can choose whether to switch flights. Importantly, the original confirmed reservation remains in place until the customer decides to make the change.
“This feature reflects our commitment to making travel more seamless and less stressful for our customers,” said Jennifer Schwierzke, Vice President of Customer Operations, Strategy & Execution at United.
“During disruptions, customers can keep their confirmed itinerary and stand by for three additional flights. We work behind the scenes to monitor availability and alert customers as soon as a seat becomes available.”
Feature Launches Ahead of Labor Day Travel Rush
United is rolling out the feature ahead of the 2026 Labor Day travel period.
The airline expects more than 3.4 million passengers to travel on United between September 3 and 8, approximately 300,000 more than during the equivalent period last year.
Mobile tools have become an important part of United’s disruption management strategy, with the airline reporting that more than 85% of its customers use the United app on the day they travel.
The latest update expands the airline’s existing self-service recovery tools, which allow passengers to rebook flights and, when eligible, receive hotel and meal vouchers without waiting to speak with an airport agent.
Customers can also use the app to track checked baggage during disruptions.
United Expands Real-Time Flight Information in Its App
United has introduced several other mobile features aimed at providing passengers with more information before and during their journeys.
Its “Where is my plane coming from?” tool is being expanded to display the location of a passenger’s inbound aircraft directly on the flight status page.
At its U.S. hubs, the airline also provides estimated TSA security wait times through the app.
United has added personalized connection assistance as well, including turn-by-turn directions between gates, estimated walking times and real-time flight information.
The system works alongside United’s ConnectionSaver technology, which can alert connecting passengers when the airline is able to hold their departing flight during particularly tight connections.
AirTag Location Sharing Integrated With United
United has also integrated Apple’s Share Item Location feature into its baggage recovery process.
Passengers travelling with an AirTag or compatible Find My network accessory can share the item’s location with United’s customer service team if their checked luggage is delayed or misplaced.
Another recent update integrates Digital ID in Apple Wallet with the United app, making it easier for eligible passengers to enrol in TSA PreCheck Touchless ID.
The new automatic standby monitoring feature builds on these additions by targeting one of the most challenging parts of air travel: finding an alternative flight after a disruption without giving up an already confirmed seat.
