Several UK headquartered airlines were forced to cancel services due to high rates of Covid-19 infections among staff, triggering Easter holiday disturbances.
More than 200 flights were cancelled by easyJet and more than 100 by British Airways because of high levels of Covid-19 sickness among staff. Nevertheless, flights to popular destinations such as Paris, Berlin and Barcelona aim to limit cancellation of services.
“As a result of the current high rates of Covid infections across Europe, like all businesses easyJet is experiencing higher than usual levels of employee sickness.
“We have made 62 pre-emptive cancellations for flights to and from the UK for [Monday] which represents a small proportion of [Monday’s] total flying programme which was planned to be more than 1,645 flights. We cancelled the majority of these [on Saturday]”, commented an easyJet representative.
However, holidaymakers that have been blocked in foreign destinations were offered alternative return air-routes. High passenger volumes, as well as Covid high rates both contributed to recent congestions across airports in the UK.
Record levels of Covid-19 infections were reported by the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), as one in every 13 people in the country was found to be affected by the virus.
