Frankfurt Airport handled around 6.3 million passengers in August 2026, with traffic remaining broadly stable compared with the same month last year despite reaching its highest monthly level so far this year.
Passenger numbers at Germany’s largest airport declined slightly by 0.3% year-on-year, while cargo traffic continued to grow.
Across Fraport’s international airport portfolio, the picture was stronger, with total passenger numbers increasing 2.1% to approximately 24.1 million during the month.
Frankfurt records busiest month of 2026
August became Frankfurt Airport’s busiest month of the year, with approximately 6.3 million passengers passing through the hub.
The airport also recorded its two busiest individual days of 2026 during August, with passenger numbers exceeding 220,000 on each day.
Despite the peak summer demand, the monthly total remained marginally below August 2025 levels.
Aircraft movements also declined. Frankfurt recorded 40,968 takeoffs and landings, down 4.6% compared with the same month last year.
Total maximum takeoff weights reached approximately 2.6 million metric tonnes, a year-on-year decline of 1.6%.
Frankfurt cargo traffic rises 2.9%
Cargo provided a stronger result for the airport during August.
Frankfurt handled approximately 179,400 metric tonnes of airfreight and airmail, representing an increase of 2.9% from August 2025.
The increase comes despite fewer aircraft movements, with Frankfurt remaining one of Europe’s most important air cargo hubs.
Ljubljana leads passenger growth across Fraport network
Most of Fraport’s international airports reported passenger growth during August, with Ljubljana Airport recording the largest percentage increase among the locations included in the latest figures.
The Slovenian capital’s airport handled 222,231 passengers, up 19.3% year-on-year.
Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports collectively welcomed approximately 7.1 million passengers, an increase of 5.1%.
The airports include major tourism gateways serving destinations such as Corfu, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos and Thessaloniki.
Lima and Brazilian airports also record growth
Lima Airport in Peru handled around 2.4 million passengers, up 4.9% compared with August last year.
Fraport’s Brazilian airports in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre also recorded combined growth of 4.9%, reaching approximately 1.3 million passengers.
In Bulgaria, Burgas and Varna airports handled a combined 875,035 passengers during the month, representing growth of 2.1%.
Both airports serve important Black Sea tourism destinations and typically experience their highest traffic during the European summer season.
Antalya traffic slips despite peak holiday season
Antalya Airport was one of the few major airports in Fraport’s international portfolio to record a decline.
The Turkish Riviera gateway handled approximately 5.9 million passengers in August, down 0.9% year-on-year.
Despite the slight decrease, Antalya remained one of the busiest airports in Fraport’s network during the peak summer holiday period.
Overall, airports actively managed by Fraport handled approximately 24.1 million passengers in August 2026, an increase of 2.1% compared with the same month in 2025.
The figures show contrasting trends across the group: Frankfurt remained virtually flat during its busiest month of the year, while several of Fraport’s international tourism-focused airports continued to record stronger passenger growth.
