Fraport Brasil has officially taken over operations at Jericoacoara Airport (JJD) in northeastern Brazil, expanding Fraport AG’s portfolio in the country to three airports.
The airport has been incorporated into Fraport’s existing concession for Fortaleza Airport (FOR), with the agreement running until 2047.
Fraport Brasil S.A. Aeroporto de Fortaleza, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fraport AG, will operate Jericoacoara Airport and plans to invest in modernizing the facility over the next three years.
Jericoacoara Airport Joins Fortaleza Concession
The concession was awarded through the Brazilian government’s AmpliAR program, which allows regional airports to be incorporated into existing airport concessions.
Under the arrangement, Jericoacoara Airport becomes part of the Fortaleza Airport concession rather than operating under a separate agreement.
Fraport’s responsibilities cover the passenger terminal and additional landside and airside infrastructure, including retail and parking facilities.
“Jericoacoara Airport supplements our existing airport portfolio and opens up additional development opportunities within the Fortaleza concession,” said Andreea Pal, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Brasil.
“With our planned modernization measures, we are laying the foundation for sustainable growth, strengthening connectivity to one of Brazil’s most popular holiday destinations, and promoting economic and tourism development in the region.”
Jericoacoara Airport Handled 260,000 Passengers in 2025
Jericoacoara Airport handled approximately 260,000 passengers in 2025, representing a 23% increase compared with the previous year.
The airport has a single runway measuring 2,200 metres long and 45 metres wide.
It is currently served by Brazil’s three major airlines: LATAM, GOL and Azul.
The airport primarily provides access to Jericoacoara and the surrounding tourism region in Ceará, which is known for beaches, sand dunes and lagoons.
Regular trade winds have also made the area a popular destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Fraport Plans Three Years of Airport Modernization
Fraport Brasil has committed to a programme of modernization at Jericoacoara Airport over the next three years.
While the company has not detailed the investment amount in its announcement, the programme will cover improvements intended to support future passenger growth and tourism development.
The airport’s integration with the larger Fortaleza concession could also create opportunities to develop connectivity between Fortaleza and the Jericoacoara tourism region.
Fraport Now Operates Three Airports in Brazil
Fraport AG entered the Brazilian airport market in 2017 after securing concessions for Fortaleza Airport and Porto Alegre Airport.
The German airport operator subsequently carried out major modernization and expansion projects at both airports.
With Jericoacoara now joining the Fortaleza concession, Fraport operates three airports in Brazil: Fortaleza, Porto Alegre and Jericoacoara.
The new concession extends Fraport’s presence into one of northeastern Brazil’s major leisure destinations while giving the company responsibility for Jericoacoara Airport through 2047.
