Flight operations at Catania Airport (CTA) are set to resume from 14:00 local time on August 15, 2026, following an improvement in volcanic conditions at Mount Etna.
The decision follows the downgrade of the volcanic activity alert from red to orange, allowing previously restricted sectors C1 and B3 to reopen.
Both arriving and departing flights will be able to resume from 14:00, according to the latest airport update.
Catania Airport Flights Resume After Etna Disruption
Operations at the Sicilian airport had been affected by volcanic activity from Mount Etna, which can disrupt aviation when ash enters the airspace surrounding Catania.
Following the latest assessment of conditions, the alert level was reduced and restrictions affecting sectors C1 and B3 were lifted.
Catania Airport said:
“Following the downgrade of the volcanic activity alert status from RED to ORANGE, sectors C1 and B3 have been reopened. Flight operations arriving at and departing from Catania Airport will resume at 14:00 local time.”
Passengers Advised to Check Flight Status Before Travelling
Although airport operations are resuming, passengers travelling to or from Catania on August 15 should check directly with their airline before travelling to the airport.
The airport added:
“Passengers are kindly requested to check the status of their flight with their airline before heading to the airport.”
Some disruption may continue as airlines restore their schedules following the temporary restrictions, with individual flights potentially affected by earlier operational changes.
Mount Etna Activity Can Affect Flights Across Eastern Sicily
Catania Airport is located close to Mount Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, and periodically faces operational restrictions when eruptions produce volcanic ash that could affect aircraft.
Airspace restrictions can range from limits affecting individual sectors to wider suspensions of arrivals and departures, depending on volcanic activity, wind conditions and the movement of ash.
The downgrade to orange and reopening of sectors C1 and B3 allows Catania Airport to restart operations from 14:00 on Saturday, August 15.
Passengers with flights scheduled later in the day are advised to continue monitoring updates from their airline, as schedules may take time to return fully to normal.
