Heathrow Airport recorded its busiest day of 2026 on 19 July, welcoming 267,000 passengers as schools across the UK broke up for the summer holidays.
During the month, more than 7.85 million passengers travelled through the airport, with strong demand for Mediterranean destinations helping to drive one of the busiest periods of the year.
Summer Travel Demand Remains Strong
Italy and Spain were among the most popular destinations during July, while Switzerland, Cyprus and the Czech Republic also recorded healthy passenger growth as travellers headed to Europe for summer holidays.
To support the seasonal surge, Heathrow deployed hundreds of additional “Here to Help” colleagues across its terminals to assist passengers throughout the airport.
Operational performance also remained strong, with 98.5% of passengers clearing security in under five minutes, while Heathrow retained its position as Europe’s most punctual hub airport.
Cargo Volumes Continue to Grow
Cargo operations also reached a new high for the year.
The airport handled its busiest cargo day of 2026 on 12 July, when approximately 5,000 tonnes of freight passed through Heathrow.
Overall cargo volumes increased 2% year-on-year during the month, supported by continued strong demand from South Asia and North America.
New Airlines and Passenger Services
Passengers travelling through Heathrow this summer can also enjoy several new food and retail offerings, including:
- Bill’s restaurant in Terminal 2.
- The first airport Slim Chickens in the UK, located in Terminal 3.
- A new Wagamama kiosk in Terminal 5.
- The airport’s Kids Eat Free promotion across selected restaurants.
Heathrow also welcomed new airline services during July, with ITA Airways, Alaska Airlines and Riyadh Air carrying more than 136,000 passengers between them.
Expansion Remains a Priority
Despite the strong summer performance, Heathrow said the airport continues to operate at full capacity.
The airport noted that Istanbul Airport overtook Heathrow as Europe’s busiest hub during July, reinforcing its argument for future expansion to support additional routes, passenger growth and cargo capacity.
Commenting on the results, Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said:
“Summer is off to a flying start at Heathrow. Together with our airlines and Team Heathrow partners we’ve achieved our busiest day of the year so far and ensured millions of passengers have gotten away smoothly on their well-deserved holidays.”
He added:
“Preparing for summer has been months in the planning, we understand how critical our role is in providing a seamless passenger experience and we’re committed to delivering throughout the summer peak. We want to go further, growing our route network and passenger offering. Expanding Heathrow will help ensure the UK remains home to Europe’s leading hub and continues to benefit from the trade, investment and tourism that increased connectivity will bring.”
During July, Heathrow handled:
- 7.86 million passengers, down 1.5% year-on-year.
- 41,026 aircraft movements, a decline of 1.1%.
- 136,623 tonnes of cargo, representing 2% growth compared with July 2025.
