The measure, a part of the group’s sustainability strategy, is already on across all LATAM’s regional and long-haul flights, as the carrier aims to put an end to all single-use plastic items use in its operations and services by 2023.
“Caring for the planet is a challenge for everyone and a necessity for LATAM, which is why we reviewed our services and identified nearly 1,800 tonnes of single-use plastic on board our international flights. So, our teams started to redefine all the details of the service, making a positive change for our customers and also for our planet”, declared LATAM Airlines Group’s Vice President of Customers.
The Premium Business segment plastic-related regulations also changed, with the group deciding to introduce reusable bags and ecological travel kits for all customers travelling in this class. Sugar cane, bamboo, kraft paper, and recycled plastic were the materials of choice for the replacements.
In addition, a new recycling and reuse policy has been implemented on domestic flights from Chile, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, via the “Recycle Your Travel” programme.
LATAM targets zero waste to landfill by 2027, 50 per cent less carbon emissions on domestic routes by 2030, as well as carbon neutrality by 2050.
