President Vladimir Putin has recognised the separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine as independent.
The announcement has been made in a recent broadcast on state television, despite politicians in the West saying the move may lead to sanctions.
“I believe it is necessary to take a long overdue decision, to immediately recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic,” Putin declared.
Moreover, Kremlin and the rebel leaders engaged into a mutual aid partnership, while the Russian president sent even more military troops in the area after the agreement was signed.
The two pro-Russian rebel held regions of Donetsk and Lugansk are parts of the Donbass region located in eastern Ukraine.
On the other hand, according to statements from senior British minister, “the Russian invasion of Ukraine has begun”, as the UK has decided imposing sanctions on Kremlin in an emergency meeting regarding the tense situation in Ukraine, chaired by PM Boris Johnson.
