The 2023 Trends Report from Saga Holidays

News

Saga Holidays, a travel agency specializing in consumers over the age of 50, recently surveyed over 3,000 of its customers to find out how they planned to vacation in 2023.

Sixty-six percent of respondents who took the study stated they would take between two and four vacations this year. Twenty-five percent of those surveyed have stated their intention to travel five or more vacations in 2023. 34% of them have scheduled more than one vacation for 2023, and 57% have already booked at least one trip.

Expenses related to living

Five-fifths of those polled indicated they were still planning to take a vacation despite the cost-of-living problem. The majority of people (86%) intend to spend less than £1,000 on their primary vacation in 2023, although 14% anticipate spending more than £5,000 per person.

According to Saga Holidays, its customers place a premium on getting a good return on their investment, so the company has introduced a new line of vacations called "Tailor-Made Travel by Saga" that gives customers the freedom to create their ideal trip with the guidance of a team of experts. Saga Cruises provides all-inclusive ocean and river routes on gorgeous, boutique ships created specifically for Saga's guests, while Saga's sister firm Titan Travel provides touring journeys to hundreds of places with fascinating adventures and flexible alternatives included as standard.

Locations and things to do

Sixty-one percent of respondents to a multiple-choice survey indicated they would visit the United Kingdom for a vacation in 2023, with 31% of those aged 50 and over planning a sightseeing trip and 30% expecting an ocean cruise.

Those over the age of 50 tend to travel during September, May, and June, and the off-seasons of December, November, and August.

People in their 50s are most likely to take a beach vacation (44%). This demographic also has the highest desire to spend vacation time with loved ones, whereas just 20% of persons aged 70 and older express an interest in making new friends.

Even though the United States, Canada, and Australia will be among the most popular long-haul destinations in 2023, and France, mainland Spain, and Italy will be among the most popular short-haul destinations, many people are also interested in travelling to Japan, South Africa, Costa Rica, India, the Galapagos Islands, Mongolia, South Korea, the Antarctic, Namibia, and Botswana.

For 47% of travellers, the most significant aspect of a vacation is experiencing the culture, nature, or history of the area they are visiting. However, within these numbers, women show a greater interest in discovery than males (51 per cent versus 43 per cent). Moreover, compared to males, women are almost three times as likely to travel without a companion (29% vs. 12%).

Additionally, the weather (cited by 46% of the over-50 crowd) and the convenience of transportation to and within the location are also important factors (45 per cent). A larger percentage of holidaymakers (43%) like to have a combination of factors planned in advance and some leisure to fill as they wish, with activities like wine tasting (23%) and music events (22%), outperforming more strenuous physical pastimes.
