Korean Air Enhances Fleet with $13.7 Billion Airbus A350 Order

Airlines & Airports

Korean Air commits to sustainability and modernization with the procurement of 33 Airbus A350 aircraft, including both A350-1000 and A350-900 models, as part of its long-term fleet strategy.

Korean Air is set to bolster its fleet with the acquisition of 33 Airbus A350 aircraft, in a significant deal valued at USD 13.7 billion. The contract includes 27 units of the A350-1000 model and six A350-900s, marking a strategic move to enhance the airline's long-term operational capabilities and sustainability efforts. This order also comes in anticipation of Korean Air's integration with Asiana Airlines, aiming to strengthen its competitive edge in the global aviation market.

The A350-1000, known for being the largest variant in the A350 family, offers seating for 350 to 410 passengers in a standard three-class layout. Its design incorporates advanced composite materials that contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 25% compared to older aircraft of similar size. Additionally, the A350-1000 boasts the longest flight range of any current passenger aircraft, capable of flying up to 16,000km with a full payload.

The smaller A350-900 variant, which typically seats between 300 to 350 passengers, offers a range of 15,370km. Korean Air plans to deploy these aircraft on long-haul routes, including the Seoul Incheon-New York flights, where the airline currently operates two daily services.

Beyond the Airbus A350s, Korean Air's future fleet expansion includes 50 Airbus A321neos, 10 Boeing 787-9s, 20 Boeing 787-10s, and 30 Boeing 737-8s. This comprehensive fleet modernization plan underscores Korean Air's dedication to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the sustainability of its operations through the deployment of the latest, environmentally friendly aircraft and ongoing sustainability initiatives.
