Record Growth and Passenger Volume
Munich Airport has reported a significant surge in passenger numbers and aircraft movements in the first half of 2024. With over 19 million passengers from January to June, the airport saw a 14.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This impressive growth brings the airport’s passenger volume to nearly 85% of the record year 2019 levels.
Intercontinental Travel on the Rise
Intercontinental travel experienced the most notable growth, with passenger numbers increasing by almost 19%. Travel to the USA and the Far East has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, with nearly 1.2 million passengers in the first six months.
Record-High Load Factor
The average load factor for aircraft at Munich Airport reached an unprecedented 80%, setting a new record. This high demand reflects the airport’s robust recovery and increasing popularity among travelers.
Increase in Aircraft Movements
The upward trend extends to aircraft movements, with over 156,000 take-offs and landings recorded in the first half of the year. This marks a 10% year-on-year increase and a remarkable 76% rise compared to 2019. Munich now offers flights to around 160 destinations worldwide, including 47 intercontinental routes.
Future Prospects and Cargo Growth
The positive trend is expected to continue with new long-haul destinations announced for the latter half of the year. Airlines are increasingly utilizing modern long-haul aircraft, such as the Airbus A350-900, with scheduled departures rising from 140 per week in the summer to 170 in the fall.
Cargo Business Thrives
Munich Airport’s cargo business also saw an uptick, with air freight and air mail volumes totaling around 147,000 tonnes, an 11% increase compared to last year.
