ITA Airways Becomes Italy’s First Airline to Introduce Self-Supply Jet Fuel Procurement

ITA Airways Becomes Italy’s First Airline to Introduce Self-Supply Jet Fuel Procurement

ITA Airways has launched a Self-Supply fuel procurement model at its Rome Fiumicino hub, becoming the first airline in Italy to manage its own jet fuel procurement as a fuel trader.

The move represents a major shift in the airline’s fuel supply strategy, allowing ITA Airways to purchase—and potentially sell—jet fuel directly while gaining greater control over one of its largest operating costs.

Greater Control Over Fuel Procurement

Under the new model, ITA Airways assumes the role of Fuel Trader, enabling the airline to manage the entire fuel procurement process rather than relying solely on traditional supply arrangements.

The initiative was made possible following recognition by the Italian customs authorities, giving the carrier a unique position in Italy’s aviation sector.

The airline expects the new approach to deliver several benefits, including:

  • Greater operational flexibility.
  • Improved control over fuel procurement.
  • Better cost optimization.
  • Increased resilience during periods of market volatility.
  • Enhanced security of fuel supply.

The model also creates opportunities to leverage fuel purchasing synergies being developed within the Lufthansa Group.

Strategic Response to Market Volatility

ITA Airways said the initiative comes at a time when global energy markets continue to face uncertainty driven by geopolitical developments and changing supply conditions.

By managing fuel procurement directly, the airline aims to strengthen operational continuity while reducing exposure to disruptions in fuel availability and pricing.

The transformation also expands the airline’s responsibilities, including new obligations related to customs procedures and taxation.

CEO Highlights Historic Milestone

Commenting on the launch, Joerg Eberhart, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of ITA Airways, said:

“The launch of the Self-Supply model represents a historic milestone for ITA Airways and for the Italian aviation industry.”

He added:

“This innovation redefines our role within the aviation fuel value chain, providing us with greater control and enhancing our ability to create value in an environment characterized by increasing volatility in energy markets and geopolitical tensions affecting fuel availability and pricing.”

Eberhart described the initiative as the beginning of a phased transformation that will strengthen the airline’s international competitiveness while creating new opportunities as the aviation market evolves.

Supporting Rome Fiumicino’s Growth

By introducing the Self-Supply model at its main hub, ITA Airways said it is reinforcing its commitment to innovation while supporting the continued development of Rome Fiumicino Airport as Italy’s leading aviation gateway.

The initiative also strengthens ITA Airways’ position within the European airline market as it continues integrating operational capabilities with the Lufthansa Group.
