Helsinki Airport Runway 2 Reopens After Renovation

Airlines & Airports

Helsinki Airport’s Runway 2 will return to full use on 1 September 2025, following the on-schedule completion of a major renovation project led by Finavia. The reopening means all three runways at Finland’s busiest airport will once again be operational, improving air traffic capacity and redistributing aircraft noise.

The €30 million project, which began in April, focused on rebuilding the southern end of the runway, modernizing taxiway intersections, and upgrading runway approach systems. Environmental improvements were also a priority, including stormwater drainage upgrades and a full overhaul of the area’s electrical infrastructure.

“The renovation ensures Helsinki Airport’s critical infrastructure is ready for years of safe and efficient operation,” said Jani Elasmaa, Vice President of apron and runway operations at Finavia.

The field lighting system for runway 15/33 was fully modernized, increasing energy efficiency and reliability. Sustainable construction practices were central to the project—recycled asphalt was used to minimize emissions and material transport, while excavated stone was repurposed for structural layers and filler.

Runway 2’s return will influence aircraft noise patterns, with take-offs resuming toward Tikkurila and northern Helsinki, and landings from Nurmijärvi, especially at night. Temporary finishing work around the runway will continue for a few weeks but is not expected to disrupt flight schedules.

In Finland’s challenging climate, runway durability is a critical focus. Pavement materials must withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, heavy snow removal, anti-icing chemicals, and the weight of large aircraft. Finavia monitors runway conditions year-round to ensure ongoing safety and performance.

This successful project reaffirms Finavia’s long-term commitment to infrastructure lifecycle management, balancing operational reliability with environmental responsibility.
