Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 2 Closes for €1.5bn Renovation

Airlines & Airports

Frankfurt Airport's Terminal 2 has ceased passenger operations as of June 9, 2026, as operator Fraport begins a comprehensive renovation and modernization program with a total investment of around 1.5 billion euros.

The terminal, which opened in 1994 and has been in intensive use for over 30 years, requires a thorough overhaul of its core building systems, including fire alarm and smoke removal infrastructure, energy systems, HVAC, building automation, elevators, escalators, and sanitary facilities. Fraport will also use the closure to restructure passenger flows, centralize security checkpoints, and create more flexible retail areas suited to different traffic streams.

All airlines previously based at Terminal 2 have already relocated to the newly inaugurated Terminal 3 in several phased moves. Key infrastructure including apron positions, the baggage conveyor system, the underground parking garage, and the Sky Line people mover will continue operating, with inter-terminal connections remaining in place throughout the works.

Detailed construction planning will take more than three years, with main construction work scheduled to begin in 2030. Terminal 2 is expected to reopen in the mid-2030s with capacity for more than 10 million passengers annually, serving Star Alliance carriers and other airlines.

"After Terminal 2 has been modernized, it will be a central component of our future hub system — with state-of-the-art processes, greater flexibility and a significantly improved travel experience for our passengers," said Dr. Pierre Dominique Prümm, Fraport AG's Chief Technical Officer.
