Lufthansa Technik Breaks Ground on New Portugal Facility

Lufthansa Technik has officially broken ground on a new 55,000-square-meter facility in Santa Maria da Feira, south of Porto, marking a major milestone for Lufthansa Technik Portugal, a subsidiary founded in 2024. The facility, dedicated to the repair of engine parts and aircraft components, is expected to begin operations in 2028.

The three-digit million-euro investment will create up to 700 highly skilled jobs in the aviation industry. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro attended the groundbreaking ceremony alongside Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr and other government and business representatives.

“Portugal has become one of the most strategically important locations for our Group beyond our home markets, and this facility reflects the confidence we place in Portuguese talent, capabilities, and ambition,” said Spohr, who also noted the investment underpins the group’s continued interest in TAP Air Portugal as part of its broader Portuguese partnership strategy.

The new facility forms part of a wider Lufthansa Group industrial commitment to Portugal, which also includes a new TravelTech and AI Hub in northern Portugal and the establishment of Associação help alliance Portugal, the first help alliance organization founded outside Germany. Seven Lufthansa Group airline brands currently operate 353 weekly flights to Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira, and the Azores, with more than 500 employees already working across the group’s Portuguese entities and an ambition to create over 1,000 direct jobs in total.

During the ceremony, Lufthansa Technik Portugal and Portuguese trade and investment agency AICEP signed a final agreement on investment incentives. AICEP Chairwoman Madalena Oliveira e Silva described the project as one of the most significant aerospace investments the agency has ever supported.
