Royal Schiphol Group has announced the appointment of Bart Smolders as its Chief Infrastructure Officer, effective 1 April 2026. In this role, Smolders will join the company’s Executive Committee and take responsibility for all construction and maintenance activities at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Smolders, 51, currently serves as Managing Director Infra at Heijmans, where he oversees major infrastructure projects. He succeeds Sybren Hahn in the role. Prior to his current position, Smolders led the mobility division at technology company Siemens and spent nearly a decade at ProRail, managing asset maintenance and rail infrastructure.
Schiphol’s CEO, Pieter van Oord, said Smolders’ expertise aligns with the airport’s strategy and masterplan, which include significant upcoming construction and maintenance programmes. Smolders said he looks forward to leading the associated investment efforts alongside Schiphol colleagues and construction partners as part of efforts to strengthen the airport’s position among Europe’s top hub airports.
The appointment highlights Schiphol’s focus on advancing its infrastructure as passenger volumes and operational demands continue to grow, with large-scale renovation and expansion projects already underway or planned for the coming years.
