For the first time in history, two modest fast-food restaurants selling traditional food have been awarded with one Michelin star, writes The Telegraph. The fast food restaurants are located in Singapore, and every tourist coming here for the holidays can try the cheapest food awarded by the Michelin guide.

On July 21, Singapore was first introduced in the Michelin guide with 29 places. Of these, two are fast-food restaurants, which is a premiere worldwide. "Singapore is a real crossroads of trade and commerce, with multiple culinary influences and a repertoire that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors," Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guides, said in a press release to announce the hawker stalls' stars. "Here's where our inspectors have discovered real jewels," he added.

Although there is no air conditioning and customers share the seats at the table, the fast food Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle and Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle have each received a Michelin star, along with some of the most luxurious restaurants in the aria. The two fast-food restaurants in Chinatown are selling 2-4 Singapore dollars dishes.

A day after winning his Michelin star, Tang Chay Seng, the owner and chef at Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, told CNBC, "There was a queue even before I opened my stall at 9:30 a.m.! I was very happy to win the award. Why did they pick me? I don't know. I've heard of Michelin before but didn't think it would have anything to do with my hawker business," he said.

Meanwhile, Chan Hon Meng, owner of Soya Sauce Chicken Rice& Noodle said he did not hear about this award until his place was awarded a Michelin star. In the past 30 years, Chan has done nothing but fast-food cooking in his restaurant and serve thousands of customers daily, so the fame brought by Michelin was the last thing they could think of.
