Hilton Sandton Scoops Top Green Award
March 27, 2012, JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Hilton Sandton’s highly successful energy efficiency programme has landed the hotel top honours in the region, and will serve as a role model for Hilton Worldwide’s 52 other hotels in the Middle East and Africa.

The hotel drastically decreased its carbon footprint by replacing all fluorescent and CFL light bulbs with Philips LED globes, and by implementing Hilton Worldwide’s global LightStay sustainability tracking system, which reduces energy use and carbon input, as well as waste output and water use significantly. Hilton Worldwide is ISO 9001 certified for its quality management system and ISO 14001 for its environmental management systems.

Hilton’s prestigious annual awards commended Hilton Sandton for its close alignment to the company’s sustainability brand standards, and for its extraordinary commitment to increasing operational efficiencies through sustainable practices.

“Hilton Worldwide has become the first major multi-brand company in the hospitality industry to make sustainability measurement a brand standard. In South Africa, given the continuously rising costs of electricity and the country’s move to becoming a green leader on the Continent, it is of paramount importance for Hilton as a brand to align itself to better management of its resources,” says Johannes van Der Putten, Vice President, Hilton Worldwide, Africa and Indian Ocean.

Once rolled out at all three hotels in South Africa, including Hilton Cape Town and Hilton Durban, Hilton’s national energy consumption is expected to drop by more than 2,600,000kwh annually and Co2 emissions by a significant 2,700 tonnes per year.
