Cathay opens largest IT hub in Mainland China

Airlines & Airports

Cathay has officially opened its largest office in Mainland China, a 25,000-square-foot Digital and IT hub located in Qianhai, Shenzhen. The launch marks a major step in the airline group's digital transformation strategy and deepens its presence across the Greater Bay Area (GBA), which includes Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

The office was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Shenzhen government officials and members of Cathay's senior leadership, including CEO Ronald Lam and Director of Digital and IT Lawrence Fong.

“Digital transformation is crucial to Cathay’s future success,” said Lam. “The new Shenzhen IT office will work in sync with our Hong Kong headquarters and Guangzhou office to boost innovation and tech capabilities.”

A regional digital engine for Cathay’s future
Strategically located in Qianhai—an innovation-driven pilot zone aimed at deepening Hong Kong–Shenzhen integration—the office will support system development, quality assurance, and technical support. It also introduces Cathay’s first “Innovation Space,” designed to foster research, collaboration, and new product development in aviation technology.

The new hub reflects Cathay’s dual commitment to digital infrastructure and talent development. The company plans to double its Digital and IT team in Mainland China to over 200 employees by the end of 2025. It will also expand its Graduate Trainee Programme and host the 8th annual Cathay Hackathon this November, attracting young tech talent from across the region.

Backed by major investment and global ambition

Part of Cathay’s broader HK$100 billion investment strategy, the Shenzhen office contributes to the Group’s goal of becoming one of the world’s greatest service brands. The airline currently serves over 100 global destinations, including 22 in the Chinese Mainland, and was recently named one of the world’s top three airlines by Skytrax.

“Over HK$3 billion annually is dedicated to digital innovation,” said Fong. “With Cathay Technologies now established as a dedicated tech arm, we’re ready to shape the future of aviation.”

The new Shenzhen IT office will play a key role in advancing aviation technology and strengthening Cathay’s leadership in digital transformation, while supporting China’s broader ambitions in high-quality civil aviation development.
