Man charged with planting secret camera in cruise ship bathroom

News

The FBI San Juan Division is trying to identify possible victims after a male was charged with voyeurism video and possession of child abuse material.

He had allegedly installed a hidden camera inside a Royal Caribbean ship's public bathroom.

According to the criminal complaint, the camera was installed on the Harmony of the Seas cruise ship by the cruise line during a 7-day cruise that left Miami, Florida in late April.

The criminal complaint stated that the man, identified by the name Jeremy Froias, boarded the Harmony of the Seas at Miami and, while the cruise ship sailed in international waters, allegedly installed a Wi-Fi hidden camera in a bathroom located on the top deck of the ship between a surf simulator and a pub.

A few days later, a passenger noticed and reported the hidden camera to Harmony’s crew. The hidden camera was found by security personnel who searched the bathroom. According to the criminal complaint filed by security, they found a Micro SD Card with video files spanning several hours.

The FBI posted an online form seeking information from potential victims. The FBI has posted a form online asking for information about potential victims.

In the initial videos, Froias is allegedly seen hiding the camera, adjusting the angle so that it focuses on the toilet and then connecting the Wi-Fi camera to his phone before leaving the bathroom.

The complaint stated that investigators also reviewed additional videos showing more than 150 people, including what appeared at least to be 40 minors, entering the bathroom either to use the toilet or to change into or out swimsuits.

According to the criminal complaint filed by the FBI, Froias "admitted placing the hidden camera" in the bathroom and informed the security staff on the ship that he was aware the camera had been taken and found because he could not find it when he checked on it May 1.

Court records indicate that at his bond hearing on Monday, Froias released his wife to be a third party custodian. He was also ordered to post a $25,000 bond, unsecured, with conditions such as not having unsupervised contact, or internet access with minors.

"Mr. Froias has not been formally indicted. Therefore, I have no comments at this time," his attorney said.

Royal Caribbean issued a statement saying that they were aware of the incident during the cruise on April 29, 2018.

"The matter was immediately reported to local and federal law enforcement and the guest involved was removed from the ship by authorities for further investigation. As this is an active case, we are unable to share any more details at this time," the cruise line mentioned.
