Italy Plans to Introduce New Eco-Friendly Tourist Trains in 2024 to Foster Sustainable Tourism

News

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Italy's state-owned railroad operator, has announced the launch of trains geared towards tourists.

These trains will be powered by vintage locomotives and run on popular vacation routes in order to attract more tourists.

In a recent press release, the company announced that FS Treni Turistici Italiani will begin operations in 2024. The service will offer "high-quality services which are sustainable and focused upon rediscovering Italy's riches." The idea is to offer a train experience that makes the carriers an integral part of the traveler's Italian journey.

The company said that the project will consist of three parts:

The Lusso, or luxury trains will be primarily the super-comfortable Orient Express – the Dolce Vita is an Italian luxury train which will debut in 2024 or the iconic Venice Simplon Orient Express, by Belmond which operates already in Europe.

Espressi and treni storici, or vintage/historic trains, will be available on long and medium routes between major cities and popular tourist destinations (such as Rome/Milan and Calalzo/Cortina) with both night and day routes. The carriages of the express trains will be from the 1980s or 1990s, giving travelers a vintage feeling with modern comfort. Restaurant cars, sleeping cars, meeting cars, and space to store bikes and skis or other mobility devices will be available. These trains will also travel to historic destinations in Italy with wine-tasting and walking tours.

Omnibus Regionali trains are slower services and will run at weekends. These regional tourist trains will be cheaper and travel through interesting landscapes and destinations known for their food traditions. These trains are designed to maximize the user experience.

CNN reported that the portfolio would also include "cruise trains": routes that will allow vacationers to shuttle back and forth between short trips.
