Iberostar Hotel in Riviera Maya affected by massive fire

Announcements
Iberostar Tucan Hotel in Playacar, Playa del Carmen in Mexico’s Riviera Maya resort on the Yucatan Peninsula closed due to fire damages

According to Riviera Maya News, the fire started on Sunday, from two palapas in the hotel precincts, as the hotel staff began 1600 guests evacuation. As a safety measure, the guests of Iberostar Tucan Hotel have been relocated north of the city, to Iberostar Playa Parasio.

The Department of Civil Protection of Solidaridad spent 15 hours to putt out the fire that spread to the areas near by in 50 feet high flames.

The possible cause of the fire was considered to be an electrical fault, but so far the authorities did not confirm the hypothesis.

Unfortunately, 20 people intoxicated with smoke and needed medical attention. Nevertheless, Jesus Puc Pat, Director of Civil Protection, declared that the lives of hotel staff and guests were never in danger.

As a big part of the hotel was destroyed by the fire, including restaurants, spa facilities, the theater, the lobby and reception areas, the management decided to close the resort for two months until it can be rebuilt.

Rafael Castro, secretary general of Environmental and Urban Planning declared about rebuilding plans:

“Those responsible for the hotel are considering a (recommended) demolition in conjunction with Environmental and Urban Planning.

“The hotel must make an application for the demolition and calculate two months to restore operations.”
