Fraport secures €2.55 million EU funding for GREENVOLT sustainability project at Frankfurt Airport
Fraport AG has signed a grant agreement with the European Union to support its GREENVOLT project, focused on expanding sustainable infrastructure at Frankfurt Airport. The EU will contribute €2.55 million toward the total €8.5 million investment, with completion scheduled by the end of 2027.
The project includes the expansion of ground power supply at nine remote aircraft parking positions. This will allow aircraft to switch off their auxiliary power units under suitable conditions, reducing fuel consumption, emissions and noise levels.
In addition, Fraport will install 322 new electric vehicle charging points across the airport apron, supporting the transition of ground service fleets and other operational vehicles to electric mobility.
A battery storage system will also be deployed in the southern part of the airport. It will store energy generated by the photovoltaic system located at Runway 18 West and redistribute it as needed, improving energy efficiency and flexibility.
According to Fraport, the GREENVOLT initiative will significantly cut CO2 emissions, air pollutants and noise, while enabling further electrification of ground operations.
The project is funded under the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program and forms part of Fraport’s broader sustainability strategy.
The company aims to achieve net zero emissions across Scope 1 and Scope 2 operations at all fully consolidated sites by 2045, expanding its focus to include all relevant greenhouse gases.
