A travel insurance comparison website looked at data from thousands of customers to reveal the most costly destinations across the globe.
According to Squaremouth.com, the most expensive holiday destinations include Africa, Antarctica, and the Oceanian islands. Overall visitor spending at these 25 locations in 2022 was 44% more than the average for all countries.
There has been an almost 50% increase from 2021 to 2022 in the amount of money spent by tourists on extravagant holiday spots, which now totals over $133 million. More than $21 million was spent by over 21 thousand tourists on trips to the 25 most costly countries.
The number of people using Squaremouth to book their luxury vacations is 57% more than it was in 2021, and their average expenditure per trip is 44% higher.
In 2022, a trip to one of these locations costs an average of almost $11,000, or about 2.8 times as much as the typical holidaymaker spends.
Africa is home to the most expensive travel destinations, making it the most costly continent overall. Among the African nations, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Kenya had the highest average per-day costs.
In 2022, more people than ever visited the Oceania islands, making up 24 percent of the world's most costly holiday spots.
There has also been a rise in the number of people visiting Antarctica in recent years, so tourists are expected to continue flocking to the continent. The number of visitors to Antarctica this year was 134% higher than in 2021. It's interesting to note that Antarctica is the only top 10 most costly vacation location that also ranks among the top 2022 holiday season choices.
For the top 25 most pricey vacation locations, the average payout for travel insurance was $717.44. Compared to the annual average travel insurance price of $242.55, it is almost three times more.
To insure travel to one of these most expensive places would cost 6.5% of the average trip cost.
