Emirates SkyCargo has successfully transported Altair-1, the United Arab Emirates’ first commercial AI-enabled Earth observation satellite, from Dubai World Central (DWC) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) aboard a Boeing 777 freighter ahead of its planned launch in October 2026.
Developed and manufactured in the UAE by Orbitworks, Altair-1 is the first satellite in the company’s planned 10-satellite Altair constellation, which will provide advanced Earth observation and geospatial intelligence services.
AI-powered Earth observation
Altair-1 is equipped with multiple sensing technologies, including optical, infrared, thermal and radio frequency (RF) payloads, combined with onboard artificial intelligence processing.
The satellite is designed to deliver analysis-ready data for applications such as:
- Environmental monitoring
- Disaster response
- Maritime surveillance
- Land and coastal management
- Infrastructure assessment
- Natural resource monitoring
The broader Altair constellation will provide frequent revisit capabilities and enhanced global coverage through its optimized orbital design.
Specialized aerospace logistics
The shipment was handled under Emirates SkyCargo’s Aerospace and Engineering cargo product, with a dedicated team overseeing the transport while maintaining strict environmental, handling and safety requirements throughout the journey.
The airline said transporting highly sensitive aerospace equipment requires specialized expertise and precision logistics to ensure satellites arrive launch-ready.
Supporting the UAE’s growing space sector
The delivery marks another milestone for the UAE’s expanding space industry and builds on Emirates SkyCargo’s experience transporting aerospace equipment worldwide.
Previous missions include transporting Arab Satellite 813 from Dubai to China and Khalifasat, the first satellite designed and built by UAE engineers, to South Korea in 2018.
In 2026, Emirates SkyCargo has transported more than 6,000 tonnes of aerospace and advanced engineering cargo worldwide.
Expanding cargo capabilities
The satellite transport also comes as Emirates SkyCargo continues expanding its freighter fleet and global network.
Since March 2026, the carrier has added six Boeing 777F production freighters and one converted Boeing 777-300ERSF freighter, with another five freighters scheduled for delivery later this year.
The expanded fleet has increased Emirates SkyCargo’s dedicated freighter network to more than 60 destinations, strengthening its ability to transport specialized cargo worldwide.
