Two more destinations affected by Zika travel alert

Travel Health

U.S. health officials have issued a Zika travel alert for two more Caribbean islands: Aruba and Bonaire

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention included Aruba and Bonaire on the list of Zika outbreak destinations. Over 30 destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America are currently affected by the spreading of the mosquito borne virus responsible for microcephaly in new-born children. Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Saint Martin, Guadalupe, Martinique, Barbados and Puerto Rico are currently under the same type of confirmed Zika cases alert.

The Department of Public Health of the Public Body reported on Tuesday the first confirmed case of Zika in Bonaire, a Caribbean island in the Leeward Antilles, near Venezuela. Health officials believe the case is not locally transmitted.

Bonaire, Aruba and Curaçao form the ABC islands group. All of them are included in the official warning.

The CDC recommends that pregnant women or women that plan to get pregnant in the near future to avoid all unnecessary travel to the infected areas. Additional protective measures include removal of potential mosquito breeding grounds, wearing of protective clothing and mosquito spray.
