Schiphol Offers Airlines 10% Discount Amid Middle East Crisis

Airlines & Airports

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is stepping in to help airlines cope with surging fuel costs, announcing a temporary discount of more than 10% on its airport charges. The move comes as carriers struggle with sharply higher kerosene prices driven by the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

The discount will be in effect from April 27, 2026 through March 31, 2027, but comes with one notable condition: it only applies to daytime flights. Night flights are deliberately left out of the scheme, as Schiphol says it wants to keep discouraging late-hour operations out of consideration for communities living near the airport.

Airport officials say the decision reflects a broader concern about keeping the Netherlands connected to the rest of the world. In times of geopolitical uncertainty, maintaining reliable air links matters not just for tourism and business, but also for the supply of goods, food, and the ability to repatriate citizens when needed.

On the financial side, Schiphol acknowledges the discount will put a dent in its results over the coming year. However, the airport insists its long-term investment plans — spanning the next decade — will not be touched. The measure is temporary, and Schiphol says it remains on solid financial footing.

It's a careful balancing act: offering airlines some breathing room without compromising the airport's own stability or its commitments to the local environment.
