Statues Become Victims of Selfie Lovers

The selfie obsession began making victims among the valuable statues, in addition to human victims

In the recent years discussing about the people who performed acts of defiance for the sake of a popular selfie increased, but most of the times, talks did not resulted in settlement. This obsession that was already classified as a mental illness apparently does not only cause damages among men, but also among the valuable works of art of historical importance.

This time, the victim of this kind of photography was a 126 years old statue which was located near a train station in central Lisbon, Portugal. Still, more concerning than the state destruction is the fact that this is not the first time a selfie lover damages an important work of art.

Apparently, a young tourist tried to take a selfie with the statue of the Portuguese King, Dom Sebastiao. Unfortunately, instead of making a common selfie, like all other tourists in the area, he decided on climbing on the statue. Because the statue was not meant to support a person's weight in more than ten seconds it crashed to the ground, writes New York Post.

The statue was very important for the locals as it was one of the oldest in the capital and the authorities have decided not to leave the event unpunished. Even if the witnesses realized that it was not an act of vandalism, but just an unhappy photo situation, the City Hall officials responsible for conservation of the main and most important work of arts in the city will initiate a lawsuit against the tourist. With a little luck, the symbol of the national Portuguese history will be restored.
