Schiphol Closes Polderbaan Runway for Maintenance May 4–12
Schiphol Airport is closing its Polderbaan runway for annual maintenance from Monday May 4 through Tuesday May 12, with the work taking place on weekdays only. The runway will remain available at weekends as usual.
During the closure, flights that would normally use the Polderbaan will be redirected to alternative runways — primarily the Zwanenburgbaan and the Buitenveldertbaan. Night flights will use the Zwanenburgbaan, and the Schiphol-Oostbaan may also come into use depending on wind conditions.
The maintenance work covers a range of tasks essential to keeping the runway safe and operational. Teams from construction firm Heijmans will repair asphalt and repaint markings, inspect electrical systems and cabling, flush the stormwater drainage system, mow surrounding grass areas, and clean or replace runway lights.
The Polderbaan closure is being coordinated with a separate, ongoing renewal project for Taxiways A and B — the routes aircraft use to reach and leave the runways. Running both projects simultaneously is a deliberate decision by Schiphol to minimise the overall disruption period for passengers and local residents.
The use of alternative runways will mean more aircraft temporarily flying over different neighbourhoods than usual. Schiphol acknowledges the impact this can have on residents living near the airport and says it plans maintenance windows carefully to complete the work as efficiently as possible.
Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Local Community Contact Centre Schiphol (BAS), reachable seven days a week between 9:00 and 17:00 on 020 601 5555 or via their website. Weekly updates on runway usage and air traffic are also published on both the BAS and Schiphol websites.
