American Airlines Steps In as Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations

Airlines & Airports

American Airlines has moved quickly to absorb the fallout from Spirit Airlines' sudden termination of operations, rolling out rescue fares and exploring additional capacity on affected routes while opening its doors to displaced Spirit employees.

The airline serves 70 of the 72 airports currently on Spirit's network, and 67 of Spirit's specific routes — giving it broad coverage to step in where passengers are left stranded. Rescue fares have been put in place immediately on nonstop routes where both carriers overlap, and American says it is actively reviewing options to add further capacity, including deploying larger aircraft and scheduling additional flights on the most critical corridors.

Spirit customers looking to rebook are being directed to the American Airlines app or aa.com to secure new travel arrangements.

On the workforce side, American has launched a dedicated microsite for Spirit team members interested in joining the airline, and recruiting events are being planned for the coming weeks. The airline is also working to arrange transportation for Spirit employees who found themselves stranded mid-trip when operations ceased.

American said it has been in contact with the Department of Transportation and the wider administration about the steps it is taking to limit the impact on communities that relied on Spirit's low-cost services.

The collapse of Spirit leaves a significant gap in budget air travel across the US, and American's response signals an attempt to fill at least part of that void — both for passengers left without flights and for the thousands of Spirit employees now facing an uncertain future.
