Uluntu Africa Joins Fair Trade Tourism Pioneers

Agency News
Uluntu Africa, a small inbound tour operator and ground handler based in Cape Town, is the latest tour operator to join the pioneering group of local and international tour operators that have developed and certified Fair Trade Tourism holiday packages.
Fair Trade Tourism holiday packages guarantee that the holiday benefits workers and owners of tourism businesses by requiring long-term trading relationships, full prepayment and binding cancellation agreements. An additional amount (called a premium) will be channelled directly into a central fund and used for development projects across South Africa. Fair Trade Tourism also monitors that price levels and contractual agreements are fair and that they are being followed, ensuring a fair deal especially for small and emerging tourism businesses.

By submitting both their internal operations and contractual relationships to a thorough audit against Fair Trade Tourism standards, Uluntu Africa are showing complete dedication to fair and responsible tourism. Says Liesel Smith, Managing Member at Uluntu Africa, "We hope that our Fair Trade Tourism packages will help to raise awareness amongst clients and other tour operators about the concept and benefits of fair and responsible travel, and inspire visitors to include these experiences in their holidays. Responsible and ethical travellers and service providers play an important role in protecting South Africa's natural & cultural heritage."

Uluntu Africa has developed 5 dedicated Fair Trade Tourism packages, including both traditional and off the beaten track destinations like Cape Town, Garden Route, Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Limpopo and rural Drakensberg. These packages will initially be marketed in the UK through Uluntu's outbound partner Baobab Travel, but it is also hoped that other outbound operators will show an interest in marketing these groundbreaking holiday offerings.

The Fair Trade Tourism certification programme is endorsed by South African Tourism, and was developed in close consultation with South African and international tourism industry professionals as well as Fairtrade International and other experts.
