Munich Airport opens new Terminal 1 pier

Munich Airport has officially opened a new pier at Terminal 1, marking a major expansion aimed at increasing capacity and improving the passenger experience.

 

The facility was inaugurated on April 13 during a ceremony attended by around 1,000 guests from politics, business and the aviation industry. Officials highlighted the project as a key step in strengthening the airport’s position as a leading European hub.

The new pier spans approximately 95,000 square metres and is designed to handle up to six million additional passengers annually. It features six levels, including modern check-in areas, centralized security screening equipped with advanced CT technology, and spacious waiting zones.

The building can accommodate up to 12 short- and medium-haul aircraft or six wide-body jets at the same time, and will serve around 40 international airlines.

Passenger amenities include dedicated rest areas, quiet zones and prayer rooms, alongside a wide range of retail and dining options. The central “marketplace” area is surrounded by around 20 shops and services, including international brands and regional offerings.

Two premium lounges are also part of the new development, including a large airport lounge with panoramic views and a dedicated Emirates lounge for eligible passengers.

Airport officials said the investment, valued at €665 million, underlines Munich Airport’s long-term growth strategy, despite challenges faced by the aviation sector in recent years.

The new pier is expected to improve efficiency, increase connectivity and offer a more modern travel experience as passenger demand continues to grow.
