Lufthansa, Fraport Deploy AI to Boost On-Time Turnarounds

Lufthansa and Fraport AG, in partnership with Lufthansa subsidiary zeroG, are rolling out “seer,” a camera-based AI solution designed to make ground operations at Frankfurt Airport more efficient and punctual.
The system records each step of the aircraft turnaround process – from boarding bridge docking to baggage loading and refueling – timestamping actions automatically. These real-time insights are compiled into a central database, giving all airport partners a unified view of ongoing operations.
After pilot testing in 2024, “seer” is now active at five aircraft stands and will expand to 20 by the end of Q3 2025, before a full airport-wide rollout.
Boosting Punctuality and Transparency
“Transparent ground processes enable us to further improve our punctuality and service quality,” said Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines. “With ‘seer,’ we’re using shared data to optimize coordination and improve efficiency across all partners at Frankfurt Airport.”
Fraport CEO Stefan Schulte added: “AI helps us streamline airport operations, reduce staff workload, and enhance passenger satisfaction. ‘Seer’ offers our teams a clearer view of every step, allowing quicker adjustments and smoother flows.”
Developed by zeroG, the AI-driven computer vision core integrates seamlessly with existing airport systems, benefiting all airlines and handlers operating at Frankfurt.
“Aircraft don’t generate revenue on the ground, yet ground operations are the most complex,” said Manuel van Esch, Managing Director of zeroG. “Our AI models deliver visibility and control in real time, helping airlines and airports optimize punctuality and resource use.”
The project underscores Lufthansa, Fraport, and zeroG’s joint commitment to innovation, setting new benchmarks for operational excellence at Frankfurt Airport while strengthening its international competitiveness.
