India files complaint against the United States

Non-immigrant temporary work visas raise dispute over India and the U.S., WTO declared on Friday

According to a World Trade Organization statement, India asked for urgent measures to be taken on account of the increased fees of temporary work visas in the US for foreign citizens and the limited job number availability.

India considered that the US took inconsistent measures to equally treat Indian and American workers. In certain sectors, such as computer services, the employees are being discriminated based on their citizenship, the Indian officials stated.

The U.S. work visa program raised awareness on its faults during the presidential election, due to the fact that both presidential candidates stated that the U.S. legislation is very permissive for foreign workers.

The outsourcing companies generate around $120 billion revenues for India every year from temporary hire of work force in the U.S. companies from various sectors.

The United States has a 10 days dead-line to respond to the Indian request. If the two counties do not reach a satisfactory agreement by negotiation, the complaint which was lodged on Thursday, will further go to the Dispute Settlement Body to be ruled upon.
