Eurpoean Ski Resorts Open For Summer Skiing

The French ski resort Alpe d’Huez recently joined the growing number of European resorts to open this year for summer skiing. Fresh snow has enabled the resort to open up sections of the glacier.
Lift passes will be 20 euros and the resort hopes to remain open until the 25th of August. However that will depend on the weather and ultimately the snow.
"There seems to be a huge amount of snow high up and up to the end of May we had well over 11m of snow last winter," said the local ski instructor, Stuart Adamson who lives in the resort year round.
Alpe d’Huez opened for a brief window in 2011 but the snow melted fairly rapidly, much to everyone’s disappointment. During the 70’s the resort used to be open on a regular basis over summer but climate change over more recent years has put pay to that.
They were also skiing in Chamonix during the first week of July with many people hiking up the slopes to ski down.
Cervinia in Italy re-opened recently for summer skiing. The resort had planned to open as usual, however, they didn’t expect the levels of snow they received. Both the Plateau Rosà glacier (25KM of ski area) and also parts of the Ventina run (7km) are open. Lift passes are 43 and 31 euros respectively.
Following heavy snowfall the Swiss resort Verbier, has just promised to open its upper slopes for the weekend of the 23th July. Ski operators have warned that the open runs are most suited to advanced skiers.
“It’s been 25 years since we have been skiing in the summer,” Eric Balet, managing director of Téléverbier. “But here there is excellent spring snow and we will be able to ski.”
Lift passes will be around 16 euros and the lifts will be open between 10am and 1pm. The early morning is likely to be icy and the late afternoons the snow a little slushy.
So it looks like 2013 is the year to give summer snowboarding or skiing a go. But don’t wait too long, the weather is warming up and it will be interesting to watch how long the snow lasts.
