Cathay Pacific Plans Direct Hong Kong–Almaty Flights
Cathay Pacific has announced plans to launch direct flights between Hong Kong and Almaty, expanding its network into Central Asia for the first time.
The new route is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with the airline planning to operate three weekly flights using Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The service will become the only direct air link between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.
The announcement was made during a visit to Kazakhstan by a delegation led by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, aimed at strengthening economic and business ties with Central Asian markets.
Cathay Pacific said the new route reflects growing demand for connectivity between Hong Kong, mainland China and Belt and Road countries across the region.
Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and commercial center, is considered a key hub in Central Asia with strong industries in manufacturing, mining and trade. Hong Kong is currently Kazakhstan’s largest trading partner in the region.
Cathay executives said the airline is continuing to expand its role in connecting Hong Kong with emerging international markets. The carrier previously launched flights to Urumqi in northwestern China, further extending access toward Central Asia.
The airline also highlighted the tourism potential of Kazakhstan, which is seeing growing international interest thanks to its outdoor tourism sector and upcoming role as host of the 2029 Asian Winter Games.
Cathay Pacific and low-cost subsidiary HK Express currently operate nearly 600 weekly return flights to Belt and Road destinations, alongside an extensive network connecting Hong Kong with mainland China.
