A bus attack which took place near the pyramids left tourists shocked in Cairo – fortunately, no one was killed
Two gunmen on a motorbike opened the fire on tourists boarding a bus near the capital city ancient pyramids, on Thursday morning. The suspects were arrested by the Police forces, which reported nobody was killed or injured in the incident.
Following the Arab spring, military coup in 2013 and the jihadist bombing of a Russian passenger plane last October, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has declared an all-out war on Islamist militants.
The Wilayat Sinai ISIS group is believed to be behind the attacks in this area. As previous attacks have mainly targeted Egyptian officials, tourists have been affected as well: three South Korean, one Croatian and another US tourist were murdered in Egypt in different armed incidents.
As Egyptian tourism was seriously affected by terror acts and is currently considerably struggling to recover, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s travel advice for Egypt warns of a “high threat from terrorism” in this area.
“We believe that terrorists continue to plan attacks. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning. Attacks targeting foreigners can’t be ruled out”, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office further states.
