Despite the Algerian government’s attempt to prioritize the tourism sector, the country’s industry progress is still not visible
Algeria ranks 132nd place out of 140 countries in travel competitiveness and development, according to the Travel and Tourism Council's report for 2015, due to three main factors: oil curse, lack of tourism marketing and lack of touristic marketing vision.
Since the Civil War in the 1990s, Algeria did not develop its tourism industry and the Algerian government ignored the country's touristic attractions development for decades, because of their living of the oil and gas industry.
Nowadays, as Algeria’s business environment is increasing, the officials are finally launching tourism development projects.
“For years the tourism industry was completely neglected by the government, but now the ministry of tourism is one of the five priority sectors, as labeled by the government.”, Ministry of Tourism advisor, Khalef, stated.
Lack of appropriate infrastructure, deficiencies in the quality of services and high prices are additional reasons why the competition between Algerian hotels remains low.
Also, lack of destination proper media promotion and communication strategy decreased the country's visibility as a touristic destination.
Although the Algerian government does have futureprojects for tourism development, lack of coordination between the different ministries and sectors considerably slows tourism growth and progress.
Competitive air travel prices, destination marketing and visa facilities are still issues of big importance to be solved by local authorities in order to make the country's travel industry develop, as last year's Algerian tourism investments were represented only by 2.7 per cent of total investments.
