Air New Zealand to launch Economy Skynest

Airlines & Airports

Air New Zealand will begin selling its new Economy Skynest sleep pods from May 18, 2026, introducing a world-first concept designed to improve comfort on long-haul flights.

The Skynest product will debut on the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, set to enter service in November. The system features six lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style layout, positioned between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins.

Designed for ultra long-haul travel, the pods allow passengers to book a four-hour session to rest during the flight. Each pod includes a full-length mattress, fresh bedding, privacy curtain, ambient lighting and charging ports, offering a dedicated space for sleep.

Initially, two Skynest sessions will be available per flight, with prices starting from NZD 495 per session. The offering is available as an add-on for passengers travelling in Economy or Premium Economy.

Air New Zealand said the concept was developed over several years and tested with more than 200 customers, aiming to address the challenges of long-distance travel to and from the country.

Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar said the innovation reflects the airline’s focus on improving passenger wellbeing, particularly on some of the world’s longest routes.

The launch builds on previous initiatives such as Skycouch, further expanding options for passengers seeking greater flexibility and comfort in lower fare classes.

The airline said Skynest represents a new approach to long-haul travel, offering more passengers the opportunity to rest properly during flights.
