Wizz Air to Close Vienna Base in 2026 Following Strategic Review

Wizz Air has announced the phased closure of its Vienna base, citing rising airport costs and taxes as incompatible with its ultra-low-cost model. The decision follows a strategic review and will be executed in two stages: two aircraft and two routes (Bilbao and London Gatwick) will be withdrawn from October 26, 2025, with full closure of the remaining operations and three aircraft scheduled for March 15, 2026.
Launched in 2018, Wizz Air’s Vienna base operated 28 routes to 20 countries with five Airbus A321neo aircraft. Despite its success, increasing operational expenses led to the difficult decision to exit Vienna and focus on growth in Central and Eastern Europe.
Wizz Air will support impacted employees with relocation opportunities and alternative roles. Customers affected by route suspensions will be offered refunds in WIZZ credits or rebooking on other Wizz Air flights. Bookings via third-party providers should be handled through those providers.
Austrian customers can continue to fly with Wizz Air from nearby bases in Bratislava and Budapest. The airline remains committed to offering affordable travel in the region and placing passengers and staff at the center of its decisions.
Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, Mauro Peneda, emphasized the airline’s gratitude to its Vienna team and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding elsewhere in Central Europe.
