Eurowings Expands Berlin Base to 11 Aircraft This Winter
Eurowings is expanding its presence at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), growing its base to eleven aircraft and more than 300 crew members for the upcoming winter schedule, as the airline moves closer to becoming the airport's leading carrier.
The expansion includes two additional aircraft, new routes, and increased frequencies. Most notably, Eurowings will launch its first nonstop service to Bologna, connecting Berlin to the capital of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. The new route, available from €49.99 in the basic fare, goes on sale May 21 via eurowings.com. In the leisure segment, the airline is adding frequencies to four Canary Islands destinations — Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Tenerife — also bookable from May 21.
The growth marks a significant milestone for the Lufthansa Group at BER. Together with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SunExpress, the group now accounts for around 30 percent of all connections at the airport. Eurowings alone has grown from three aircraft stationed at BER after the pandemic to eleven, serving nearly 50 destinations.
"We believe in Berlin and see strong prospects for the location," said Max Kownatzki, CEO of Eurowings. "Berlin attracts people from all over the world — as a political capital, a cultural powerhouse and a business hub with significant potential."
Kownatzki also cautioned that rising taxes, fees, and EU regulatory burdens are discouraging airline investment in Germany, calling on policymakers to address the competitive disadvantages facing the domestic aviation industry. Further new routes and the full winter schedule at BER are expected to be confirmed in July.
