Wizz Air expands Bucharest network with new routes and Baneasa boost

Airlines & Airports

Wizz Air will add a second aircraft at Bucharest Baneasa and launch six new routes from Otopeni this October, increasing capacity and travel options for Romanian passengers.

Wizz Air is expanding its operations in Bucharest with the allocation of a second aircraft at Baneasa Airport and the launch of six new routes from Otopeni Airport, starting this October. The move reflects the airline’s strategy to strengthen regional connectivity while offering passengers more affordable travel options during the upcoming winter season.

“Bucharest remains our most strategic market,” said Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta. “By growing our presence at Baneasa and adding new routes at Otopeni, we’re meeting rising demand while bringing smart, low-cost travel even closer to our passengers.”

Baneasa gets new aircraft and route relocations
Beginning in October 2025, Wizz Air will relocate nine existing routes from Otopeni to Bucharest Baneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport, with five of them exclusively operated from the secondary airport. These include direct flights to Basel, Frankfurt Hahn, Memmingen, Nice, and Athens.

Four additional routes—Milan Bergamo, Barcelona, Brussels-Charleroi, and Turin—will be split between the two airports. Thanks to the new aircraft, Wizz will operate 42 weekly frequencies from Baneasa.

Romania has been a cornerstone of Wizz Air’s growth since its launch in the country in 2006. The airline now operates 204 routes from 13 Romanian airports, connecting travelers to 75 destinations across 25 countries. With over 1,600 employees in Romania and eight operational bases, Wizz Air continues to be a key driver of low-cost air travel in the region.

In line with its eco-efficiency goals, Wizz Air also maintains one of the youngest, safest, and most fuel-efficient fleets in Europe, and has over 300 new aircraft on order.
